Carl

Age:4
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Gender: Male

Weight: 11 lbs

Carl came to us through a very unique situation. He was at a shelter, suffering from obvious neurological issues. The shelter was going above and beyond to understand what was causing his symptoms. They took him to multiple specialists and eventually found their way to our partner, Rise Pet Health. Rise was able to diagnose him with a spinal subarachnoid diverticulum (which is a fancy term for a pocket of fluid on his spinal cord) and explained that surgery was the only way to fix it—but the shelter didn’t have the funds to move forward. Faced with an impossible choice, they made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him.

But during all the testing, the team at Rise had grown fond of Carl. They could see just how special and amazing he was. The idea of saying goodbye was devastating. So they called us with an idea: what if Unconditional took Carl in? As a rescue dedicated to senior and special needs dogs, we had the resources and experience to not only help him, but also save his life. One of the technicians at Rise even offered to foster him for us. How could we say no?

So, within 24 hours, Carl was transferred into our care, and we were scheduling him for the life-changing surgery he needed.

Fast forward to now, and Carl is absolutely thriving in his foster home! His procedure went well, and he is finally done with his recovery period and ready to be adopted.

While in foster, we’ve really gotten to know little Carl. He’s sweet, snuggly, and never far from your heels—literally. The second he’s out of his crate, Carl’s on your tail, ready to follow you from room to room like your most loyal (and tiniest) sidekick. Carl is also a certified blanket burrower who loves nothing more than nestling into a warm, fuzzy blanket… but your lap is a great second choice.

When he’s not busy being a cuddle bug, you can find him playing and having fun. He’ll happily bring you his favorite toy to start a game of fetch and then zoom off to bring it back again, tail wagging the whole time.

Carl’s ideal home will be patient, loving, and ready for the joy and cuddles he brings in return. He may be small, but his heart (and bark!) are mighty—and he’s so ready to find a family who sees just how special he is.
